Question why-use-percentages

If percentages are fractions, why do people use percentages instead of writing every comparison as a fraction?

Steps only

Percentages use a common denominator of 100.

That makes many comparisons easier to read and compare.

Answer

Percentages give a familiar common scale out of 100, so quantities with different denominators can be compared quickly. Fractions can still be more exact or simpler in some cases.

Question why-denominator-100

Why do we choose 100 as the denominator when writing a percentage? Why not use 10, 50, 1,000 or another number?

Steps only

“Per cent” means “per hundred”.

Using 100 gives a shared scale for comparisons.

Answer

A percentage is defined as an amount per 100. Other denominators can also be useful, but they are written as fractions or rates rather than percentages.
