A PRACTICAL STARTING POINT
Every learner is different. Use these ideas to start a conversation with your child, family, school, and educator.
Ask what helps the learner feel safe, understand what comes next, and communicate choices. Predictable routines, clear instructions, visual supports, and interests chosen with the learner can make participation easier. Adapt each idea to the child rather than assuming one approach works for everyone.
A special educator can identify the parts of a task that are difficult and teach them in smaller, clear steps. Ask how they will use practice, examples, accessible materials, and feedback while building on the learner’s strengths. A support plan should be individual and reviewed as the child grows.
When a learner is distressed or finds a routine hard, look for what may be making the situation difficult and what the learner is communicating. Ask how the educator will make routines predictable, support communication, and agree on calm, respectful responses with the family and school.
Inclusive support helps a learner participate in lessons, play, and school routines with peers. This may involve adapting learning materials, using assistive tools, coordinating with classroom teachers, and checking that the learner has a meaningful voice in decisions.
BEFORE YOU CHOOSE
Look for a respectful partnership, clear goals, and support that fits the learner.
A SIMPLE SUPPORT ROUTINE
These are flexible ideas, not a fixed programme. The learner’s communication, energy, interests, and goals should guide each session.
GET READY TO TALK
A few everyday examples help the educator understand the learner’s whole experience, not only the parts that feel difficult.
Offer real choices, explain what will happen, and ask what feels helpful. Protect privacy, speak directly to the learner in an age-respectful way, and treat their strengths and preferences as part of the support plan.
